"Why is there a law that says you cannot sue an ammunition dealer that allowed 4,000 rounds of armor-piercing bullets into the wrong hands?"
This article describes how the gun dealerships and manufacturers are responsible for their daughter's death. Numerous comments point out that had it been a car, you don't sue the car dealership or manufacturer, or if it was DUI that you charge the beer company.
They said they should look into people more as to who makes these purchases. That is not up to the gun company/manufacturer. There are regulations and laws that do this. If I make a scarf and someone uses it to strangle someone, am I responsible? Why didn't I look into the customer's past and determine if I should sell to that person?
Yes, that example is a bit absurd. However, companies sell things all the time. They get their products from manufacturers. So why not attack the person who made the crime rather than the sources he used to obtain his weapons?
If I break into a house using equipment from Home Hardware, should the victim also sue them if I killed someone while robbing the house?
There is a point where going to far up the chain is frivilous. There are issues with guns, of course. Just like DUI's and car accidents, and death by cigarettes. How far up the chain do you go? Where do you lay responsibility?
If there was any law broken that resulted in this killer getting the items needed to commit this crime, then yes- go after the guilty party. However, punishing a company that sells a product because someone out there used it in a bad way is not valid. Punish the person who used the item to do illegal things.
BTW, I do think stricter gun laws and gun control is required.
